Ocean Pulse is a comprehensive study of coral reef ecology and the marine environment. It is an inspiring, hands-on program for students in grades K-college. These courses unite students and the local community as they conduct a field survey of our most precious natural resource – the ocean.

BACKGROUND:

Our ocean and beaches become a “Living Classroom.” Students learn to identify reef species, gather data, and compare it to previous studies.  This provides vital information about the health of the reefs and promotes a positive direction for other ocean communities to follow.

Students learn the importance of protecting a fragile ecosystem, how coral reefs interconnect with all species in the ocean, and crucial steps required to preserve our marine environment. Our next generation needs this knowledge in order to assure the life of our oceans. By the time the present students graduate from High School, they will have the consciousness that conservation is a positive, if not essential way of life.

Ocean Pulse is aligned with grade specific content and performance standards. These courses provide teachers with valuable tools and community connections needed for carrying out on-going, “meaningful” experiences in their classrooms. The Ocean Pulse Outreach Department provides teachers with opportunities for professional development in the area of environmental education. Teachers that weave critical environmental issues together with classroom and field activities can stimulate interest and lead young people toward thoughtful stewardship of natural resources.

The Ocean Pulse manual provides a standard for student marine education, coral reef study, and the gathering of baseline information. These standardized and easy to follow courses may be utilized by school districts in diverse locations worldwide. Our vision is to establish a global network (via the Internet) of informed and empowered “Ocean Guardians” to assure the life of our oceans.

Ocean Pulse – All Ages and Grade levels

Students focus on the complex relationships within ecosystems resulting from changes in climate, human activity, and the introduction of non-native species. Activities include investigating the formation of the islands, determining fish & turtle population assemblages, coral reef monitoring, classifying and mapping native and introduced species, measuring biotic and abiotic factors of different ecosystems, marine mammal study, and applying international oceanographic sampling and research protocols to define the marine environment. Students also “Adopt-A-Reef” and become “Ocean Guardians” of their local beaches. This information is made available to other students around the globe via the Internet.

Ocean Pulse Certification

– All ages and Levels!

Advanced Ocean Pulse! This Certification Program offers an exciting opportunity for students to engage in research, and receive hands-on training in marine sciences. This is a course on species identification and classification, calcification and structure of coral, origins and distribution of species, composition, zonation, reproduction, productivity, growth, species interaction, and identifies the role of algae and Zooxanthellae. Emphasis is on experiential labs to survey and monitor reef organisms using internationally known research protocols.

Students learn ecological principles, conservation issues related to the Hawaiian Ahupua’a system and resource management methods. Most importantly, they realize the impact and consequences of human activities on reef ecosystems. Student “Peer Ecologists” may work directly with instructors to educate other students on the techniques used in Ocean Pulse. This instills pride and furthers interest in Marine Biology.

Ocean Pulse @ Sea is a drug free marine education program that allows students to learn sailing, safe boating techniques, marine ecology, coral reef monitoring, environmental education, scientific research, and career training from local educators and community members aboard sailing research vessels.

Research Vessels have ports in Hanalei Bay, Nawiliwili Harbor and Port Allen on Kaua’i, for year-round educational programs. These boats have served as research vessel for the following community groups: The Waipa Foundation, The Kaua’i Children’s Discovery Museum, Hawaii International School, Kula High, Intermediate and Elementary, Myron B. Thompson Academy, University of Hawai’i at Hilo, Na Pali Coast Ohana, and the Hawai’i Youth Conservation Corp.

Student Involvement: Students and community members are offered different levels of involvement in the program. The first level of the program are activities that center on the boat: fieldtrips, whale watching, snorkeling & SCUBA, marine education, scientific studies, and sailing technique training, anything – simply as an alternative to being somewhere else doing drugs. The next level is a crew trainee position. Student volunteers will learn from qualified professionals how to crew the boat, eventually leading up to the next level, being a qualified or certified crewmember, or USCG captain. These crewmembers are subject to the USCG random drug-testing program, which is the ultimate deterrent to drugs. A person at this level will also be qualified for employment on a charter boat. The program is an alternative and deterrent to drugs, and a positive stepping-stone in the visitor industry on Kauai.

Students are also trained as “ecologist tour guides” by members of Save Our Seas, in ecology, geology, biology and the Hawaiian cultural relatedness to these subjects.

These quality sail training vessels are a unique and productive platform for the young people of Hawaii.  As students participate on the research vessels, they are exposed to ideas in resource conservation by using environmental earth-friendly products and cleaning supplies, alternative energy sources like bio-diesel, and promoting recycling. These vessels are the SOS model for their yearly “SOS Coconut Award.” This award is given to local businesses that use environmental practices. Award winning businesses are chosen by the students.

Ocean Pulse was a success in 1996 and 1997, and is again a success in 2003-2008 at Kula High, Intermediate and Elementary K-12 and 2003 a the Myron B. Thompson Academy on Kaua’i. High school interns serve as peer ecologists and lifeguards!

Ocean Pulse could easily be introduced to island communities throughout the world; to teach the children how to identify creatures, compile marine data, and measure water quality.

Anini to Kalihiwai to the Kilauea Lighthouse

Anini is indeed a special place. As the largest stretch of reef on Kauai, it is home to patch and fringing reefs that grow beneath legendary breaking waves that help protect the inland waters and keep Anini Beach Park calm year round.  The name for the beach fronting Anini Beach Park is Kalihikai and the beach to the west of the park is called Anini.  (References to our survey sites are generally referred to as “Anini”.) Save Our Seas has conducted research at Anini Beach with grades K-12 since 1996 making it the longest coral reef education program of it’s type in the nation.

Anini Beach Park is popular county beach park with a boat ramp, good snorkeling site, and many wind and kite surfers. The beach park is midway along the beach.   The ramp facility in the beach park is for smaller, shallow-draft boats.

The inner reef structure of Anini benthos is primarily unknown.  The sand of Hanalei Bay originates at Anini and is brought to Hanalei by ocean currents.  Anini also has a rare Halophilia sea grass community where turtles can be found grazing.

Anini, Wanini, or Wai-nini? There are many version of this name and the old-timers say that this is its real name.  No one knows what the real name is to this day.

Name translation:  ‘Anini- “stunted or crawfish”,  Wai-nini- “spilled water”, Wanini- “pouring water”

The plant ‘anini  or wānini, Eurya sandwichensis is a small rather glabrous tree in the tea family which occurs more often as a shrub. It usually grows in the in the plains or ridges of the Ahupua‘a.

Wanini was the name of the first road sign… but Hanalei resident Walter Sanborn was mad because the sign was misspelled (should be Wainini) and shot off the W with a shot gun.  However, people started calling the area ‘Anini because they thought the gunman had now corrected the spelling. Residents say the correct name is Wainini, since there were springs in the cliffs that oozed water which dripped down the face of the cliff and could be collected.

Anini is Hawaii’s third largest fringing reef, it is one of the longest and widest fringing reefs in Hawai’i at 2 miles long and 1,600 feet wide at its widest point.  There is a narrow calcareous sand beach inshore of Anini Reef. Early Hawaiians raised taro and fish in ponds constructed along the shoreline. Streams flowed into the fishponds and through the many lo‘i kalo (taro patches) that Hawaiians built to grow their staple food crop. Rice was also grown in this area in the early 1900’s.  One story speaks of “Anini (Wanini) at the seashore there are two stones, Pohaku Aweoweo (big), Pohaku ‘U’u by the sand for fishing.  ”The stone called “Pohaku-alalauwa” lies in the sea between Kalihi-kai and Wanini. When the alalauwa fish was seen to swim partly around this rock it meant that schools of this fish were coming to the shores of this island, but, if they swim all around it then they will go to every island of the group…” www.Kumupono.com

The calm waters, protected shorelines, and many streams feeding into the coastline, provided ideal conditions for the development of shoreline loko i’a (fishponds). Early Hawaiians recognized these favorable conditions and constructed many in coastal areas like this.  Today most of those fishponds have been filled as the coastline was developed. Restored ponds that remain in nearby Waipa remind us of the ingenuity of the Hawaiians who engineered this early form of aquaculture. The old rock walls of the remaining loko iÿa have withstood the elements and many forces of change over time.

The Hawaiians recognized each individual type of wind as having a name, and a personality.  There are hundreds on record for Kauai.  At Anini it is recorded “He Ku ‘ula ka makani o Anini. The Ku-‘ula is the wind of Anini.”  (Pukui)

There is not as much on record for Anini as for other sites in the Archipelago.  Most certainly its crystal clear waters were home to abundant fish and corals, with white sand beaches along the shoreline, as anyone who enjoys Anini Beach Park can attest.   Today the combination of sedimentation, pollution, alien species, overfishing, and marine debris all threaten the health and diversity of the reefs at Anini.

Thanks to the crashing winter waves and strong currents, Anini Reef (and most of Kaua’i) has a high “flushing rate” (open ocean waves keep the water churning and mixing) so nutrients and other pollutants that drain into the sea don’t stay on the corals long enough to do irreparable damage.   In the summertime when surf on the north shore calms down, Anini has a lower flushing rate and the native alga Cladophora appears in large blooms.  Bring your students in May or June to see the full effect of the invasion!

Sediments and Pollutants

Extensive sedimentation of the area began in the 1940s when sugar and pineapple plantations left soil exposed to heavy rainfall. In the 1970s, increased development of the area for homes caused extensive run-off of soil. Channelization of streams to control flooding around the developed areas also increased run-off of soil and nutrients, such as nitrates and phosphates, during heavy rainfall. Erosion from cattle grazing in upland areas contributes to landslides, which add to the sedimentation and accumulation of nutrients in the water.

Human development also causes pollution of the water from sewage disposal. Many of the homes in the area are constructed with underground septic and/or cesspool tanks which leach raw sewage into the surrounding waters during high tides and periods of heavy rainfall.  This contributes to the buildup of nutrients and sediments on the reef. The nutrient-enriched waters stimulate the growth of phytoplankton, which decreased the clarity of the water. Cladophora spp. also began to grow rapidly during summer months with the increase in nutrients. This algae along with other species of cyanobacteria displaced corals and disrupted the natural balance of the coral reef ecosystem.

Kaua`i has documented intermittent high concentrations of nutrients (nitrate, phosphate, silica, and ammonium) and fecal indicator bacteria (FIB, i.e., enterococci and Escherichia coli) in nearshore waters and spurred concern that contaminated groundwater might be discharging into the bay. Nutrient concentrations in groundwater were significantly higher than in nearshore water, inversely correlated to salinity, and highly site specific. [Knee_etal_2008]

There is an old dump that drains into the first set (East of park) of streams. (interview 09’)

Higher concentration of sedimentation, algal & cyanobacteria growth near the west bathrooms could be caused by:  Polo Fields fertilizers, animal waste runoff, septic/cesspool from the bathrooms, and seepage from private homes in the area who were not required by law to change from cesspool to septic.

It is believed that many Princeville contractors and business owners wash their chemicals, pesticide and other biocide into storm drains which makes it’s way to Anini and beyond.  One person and One Business can make a difference!

When nutrients, such as nitrates from human sewage and lawn, polo field, or golf course fertilizers wash onto the reef, conditions are favorable for the fleshy limu species, such asCladophora to grow more rapidly. In addition, since 1950, there have been 18 different species of limu introduced to O’ahu, some intentionally for aquaculture research, and others accidentally on ship hulls (Russell, 1992).  Some of these species have spread to the outer islands.  Five of those species have become highly invasive, including Acanthophora spicifera, Gracilaria salicornia, Kappaphycus spp., Hypnea musciformis, and Avrainvillea amadelpha(Smith, 2002).

Another factor that contributes to the invasion of limu species and the degradation of the reef is overfishing. The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources (DLNR/DAR) requires commercial fishers to file fish catch reports, which helps the agency to monitor the resources. DAR reports that there has been a significant decrease in the abundance of inshore marine resources over the past three decades (DLNR/DAR, 2005). When herbivorous fish that help to control the growth of limu are overfished, this affects the balance of the coral reef.   Our goal is to highlight how Kaneohe Bay is severely invaded and with Anini being much like Kaneohe it could someday look like Kaneohe if we are not careful.

Gill Nets

“Lay gill nets are monofilament meshing that can be strung together for hundreds, even thousands of feet and indiscriminately kill huge numbers of fish and other marine life with no regard to species, age, or season. Lay gill nets destroy habitat. They damage coral and sea grass beds, destroy critical nursery, foraging, spawning, and refuge areas for fish and shellfish. At times, massive nets drift away with the current or are forgotten, entangling endangered monk seals, sea turtles, and a range of other marine life. Common practice is to leave nets unattended in nearshore waters for long hours and often overnight. Lay gill nets have severely damaged our coral reef ecosystems and depleted (our) fish stocks” (Kahea, 2006).

In March, 2007, Governor Linda Lingle signed lay gill net restrictions into law. The law:

–Eliminates all lay gill nets around the island of Maui and three much depleted areas on Oÿahu, and restricts use of the nets statewide;

–Prohibits the setting of lay gill nets overnight;

–Limits their length to 125 feet and mesh size;

–Requires nets to be registered and marked;

–Requires that nets not be left unattended for more than 30 minutes (Fair Catch Hawaii).

Marine Debris

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),

Marine debris is typically defined as any man-made object discarded, disposed of, or abandoned that enters the coastal or marine environment. It may enter directly from a ship, or indirectly when washed out to sea via rivers, streams and storm drains”.

“Marine debris is a historical problem that is continuing to grow.  Every year, marine debris injures and kills marine mammals, interferes with navigation  safety, has adverse economic impacts to shipping and coastal industries, and poses a threat to human health.  Our oceans and waterways are constantly polluted with a wide variety of marine debris ranging from soda cans and plastic bags to derelict fishing gear and abandoned.

Ocean Acidification

In addition to all of these threats, the issue of global warming is recognized to have an impact on the acidity of ocean water, which affects coral reefs. Approximately one-third of the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere from fossil fuel burning and other human activities is absorbed into the ocean each year. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution the pH (acidity) of the surface water of the oceans has decreased by about 0.1 units (IUCN and TNC, 2008). The reefs are directly affected because the carbon in the carbon dioxide forms carbolic acid in seawater.  Corals need calcium to grow, so with the calcium diminished, coral reef growth declines. If the acidity of the seawater increases past a certain threshold, the calcium in existing reefs can actually be dissolved.

According to the IUCN and TNC report (2008) “The best evidence to date suggests that skeletal growth of most corals will decrease by about 30% once atmospheric CO2 concentration reaches 560 ppm, and that many reefs will shift from a reef-growth to a reef-erosion state before that, particularly where reef-building corals have declined due to bleaching, disease and other factors.”

The beautiful and diverse coral reefs of Anini are an incredible resource that is changing. Unfortunately, the reefs are losing their diversity as invasive limu (algae) species overgrow the corals. At Anini we see a major overgrowth of Cladophora spp. in the summer months.

Gracilaria salicornia, (an introduced invasive) also known as “gorilla ogo” and Dictyosphaeria cavernosa,commonly known as green bubble algae, are native species that have become invasive in Hawai’i. These two are the most successful invaders at Kaneohe Bay.  We do not want to see these come to Kaua’i.   We can compare Anini to Kaneohe to show what happens to a true “invaded” reef, and see the AniniCladophora invasion primarily in May and June.

The factors that lead to algae reef invasions can all be traced back to human activities. The student reading provided with this activity includes a chronology of events that contributed to the invasion of coral reefs by limu species.

In a balanced, healthy reef ecosystem, corals and coralline algae are the dominant species. The fleshy limu are less dominant but they play an important role at the base of the food chain, supporting the diverse species of invertebrates and herbivorous fish that feed on them. When nutrients, such as phosphates from human sewage and lawn or golf course fertilizers wash onto the reef, conditions are favorable for the fleshy limu species to grow more rapidly.

Homes built at Anini, like many places across the state, have cesspools (a hole dug in the ground with a cement top) that overflow during heavy rainstorms carrying sewage to the ocean and also “leak” as the tides go in and out.  Thanks to a recent law passed nationwide by the EPA in 2000, cesspools are no longer being built and must be replaced by plastic septic tanks.

Another factor that contributes to the invasion of limu species is overfishing. The Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources (DLNR/DAR) requires commercial fishers to file fish catch reports, which helps the agency to monitor the resources. DAR reports that there has been a significant decrease in the abundance of inshore marine resources over the past three decades (DLNR/DAR 2005). When herbivorous fish (like surgeonfish) that help to control the growth of limu are overfished, this affects the balance on the coral reef. When overfishing is combined with excessive nutrients from human activities on land, the stage is set for invasion.

Since 1950, there have been 18 different species of limu introduced to O’ahu, some intentionally for aquaculture research and others accidentally on ship hulls (Russell, 1992).  Five of those species have become highly invasive, and have spread to the outer islands, including Kauai.

Key Events:

•1940 – Sugar and pineapple plantations left exposed soil that washed into bay during heavy rains.

•1959 – Konohiki (local fishing rights) change as Hawaii becomes a state of the union.

•Princeville Ranch obtains a lease 2500 acres of land near Anini, severely eroding the hills by cattle grazing causing more sedimentation on the reef as soil and nutrients wash down to the sea.

•There is an old dump that drains into the first set of streams.

•To the East Kalihiwai valley and homes of Kalihiwai Ridge “drain” to Kalihiwai River.

•Cesspools dug during land development leach raw sewage into the surrounding watershed during heavy rainfall.

•Boat ramp has potential pollution impacts.

  1. •Human population growth in the area increased. Land cleared for houses and roads, causing more sedimentation.
  2. •Golf Courses are built above Anini
  3. •1983 – Kauai Polo Club began holding events at Anini field (above Anini Beach Park) that contribute to run-off of soil and nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates.

•2000 – EPA passes a law nationwide for the outlaw of cesspools in favor of septic tanks.

The following are potential locations for benthic monitoring transects in the adjacent area of the Kukui’ula development. These locations account for potential runoff from the proposed golf location bordering the coastline as well as major commercial development inland from the coast.

Transect locations:

•East side of Lawai Bay (follow coastline) – 14th hole run off

•West of Spouting Horn – 15th hole run off: down current where pollution would accumulate in the benthic sediment and reefs.

•East of Kukui’ula Small Boat Harbor, where road runs along coast – South of proposed “Plantation House” community centerpiece; it has an existing drainage ditch to divert the flow of runoff toward Kukui’ula Bay (small boat harbor). Just outside of the bay in the direction of the current.

•Cross section of bay and around Nahumaalo Pt., where Waikomo Stream meets bay – South of proposed “Kukui’ula Village” shopping center (can access from Hoonani Rd. at Koloa Boat Canoe Landing)
Kukui’ula is a Hawaiian word meaning “red light” (source). The anglicized version (Kukuiula) is the name of a land area, a bay, and a park on the island of Kaua’i, Hawai’i. The State of Hawaii operates a small boat harbor on Kaua’i also using the name Kukui’ula (source). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recognizes Kukui’ula as the name of the habitat of the endangered Kaua‘i Cave Arthropods Adelocosa anops(Kaua‘i Cave Wolf Spider), and Spelaeorchestia koloana (Kaua‘i Cave Amphipod). (source1)(source2)(source3).  In Hawaiian mythology, Kukui’ula was the demon-wife of Waiolola who lived near Kipahulu on Maui, Hawaii. From the mythology comes the names Kukui’ula Gulch and Kukui’ula Stream on the island of Maui. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also has a rainfall gauge on Kaua’i by that name. Furthermore,  Kukui’ula is also the name of a public street near Koko Head on the island of Oahu, Hawaii (source).

World Oceans Day

Aloha Everyone,

Friday June 8th is World Oceans Day! 
In celebration and to further our efforts as volunteers to preserve, sustain and restore our valuable coral
reef ecosystem here on Kauai, Malama Na Apapa and Save Our Seas will be
performing a reef survey.  The reef survey will be held on World Ocean’s Day, Friday June 8th at Pu’u Poa Beach(the beach in front of the St. Regis Princeville Hotel) from 9am to 12noon.
 
Everyone is welcome to attend the reef survey.  If you do not want to get
in the water you can participate in the shoreline clean up on the beach
while the others are in the water doing the reef survey by snorkel or
scuba.

In order to participate in the reef survey you will need to complete the
Eyes on the Reef Training and/or the Reef Check Training classes.

The Reef Check training class will be held on Wednesday June 5th from 4pm
-7pm at the Anahola club house.  I will be conducting the Reef Check
training.  Please see the attached Reef Check flyer for more details.

The Eyes on the Reef Training class will be held on Thursday June 7th from
4pm – 6pm at the St. Regis Princeville Hotel.  Captain Paul Clark,
President of Save Our Seas will be conducting this training.

For the first time ever, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will conduct an open review of national and regional actions to protect deep-sea species and ecosystems beyond national jurisdiction from the harmful impacts of bottom fishing. Two resolutions calling for urgent action were agreed at the United Nations in 2006 and again in 2009 as part of a compromise following global concern over the destructive impacts of bottom fishing on the high seas.   This review is scheduled to take place at UN  headquarters in New York September 15-16, 2011

The 2011 UNGA review comes two years after an initial review in 2009 and will specifically assess the extent to which the two abovementioned UNGA resolutions have been implemented by high seas fishing States and regional fisheries management organizations with a view to making further recommendations for action.  High seas bottom fishing States include, among others, Australia, China, France, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, the Russian Federation and South Korea.  This review therefore represents an accounting by high seas bottom fishing States to the global community of how well they have lived up to their agreed obligations to protect and conserve vulnerable deep-sea marine habitats  and ecosystems.

The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC) has engaged with world renowned scientists and our partner organizations to assess compliance with the UNGA resolutions on high seas bottom fishing. This assessment is contained in reports that will be released at the 2011 UN review.  Based on this assessment, the DSCC has concluded that high seas fishing States are, with few exceptions, failing to live up to the provisions of UNGA resolutions 61/105 and 64/72.  As a result, deep-sea species are increasingly overexploited and VMEs continue to be significantly damaged.

The DSCC therefore urges the General Assembly to call for:

  1. The immediate cessation of high seas bottom fishing except where  conservation measures consistent with UNGA resolutions 61/105 and 64/72, and any subsequent UNGA resolutions, are in force and have been effectively and fully implemented;
  2. The protection of all VMEs as identified in paragraph 42 of the FAO Guidelines on Deep Sea Fisheries, including long-lived fish species, spawning areas on the high seas and unique habitats such as seamounts and canyons; and,
  3. The designation of high seas bottom fishing as IUU fishing when it is conducted in contravention of international instruments, including UNGA resolutions 61/105 and 64/72, regional measures, such as UNGA compliant conservation and management measures adopted by regional fisheries management organizations, or UNGA compliant national rules.

First documented broadcast spawning for Cauliflower Coral in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument

First documented broadcast spawning event for the coral species, Pocillopora meandrina (Cauliflower coral) in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument

Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) workers diving at French Frigate Shoals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, part of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument and the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge, have photographed for the first time a spawning event for cauliflower coral (Pocillopora meandrina).  Cauliflower coral is a common, reef building coral species found throughout the Hawaiian Islands and the Indo-Pacific, but its spawning had never before been documented.

“The spawning event was spectacular!” reports Fish and Wildlife Service volunteer Lindsey Kramer.  She and her colleagues reported that one or two colonies would begin to spawn in an area, and then neighboring colonies would follow.  Gray, smoke-like puffs of reproductive materials were ejected from each coral in waves, until the water became a hazy gray.  The out-going tide washed the spawning materials away within a few minutes, and the entire event lasted only about 10 minutes across the entire lagoon. SOS “International Clean Oceans Conference”

In 1992, at the Rio Conference on the Environment and Development, the United Nations declared the second Saturday in June of every year as International Oceans Day. Its objectives are to raise public awareness about the importance of the planet’s oceans in our lives: educate students, citizens and key decision makers about managing human activities related to the oceans, and how each person can make a difference; promote oceans “caretaker” activities, including projects, research and cultural and educational events; strengthen existing ocean networks, databases and information exchange; promote law and policy development through oceans education. SOS learned about the proclamation over the internet as a number of marine conservation organizations in Canada and Europe were setting up websites for the event. As far as SOS could determine, no organization in the United States recognized International Oceans Day. We asked Governor Cayetano and each of the mayors throughout Hawaii to issue written proclamations declaring June 8, 1995 (and in perpetuity) as Oceans Day throughout the State of Hawaii. They did, and we have these proclamations on display at our headquarters on Kauai.

We set about organizing the event and dedicated oceans Day 1995 to “Coral Reefs, the Rainforests of the Ocean.” Oceans Day commenced with Hawaiian chants and blessing by kumu hula, Pa’ula Chandler, Dr. James Maragos of the UH East West Center and one of the leading coral reef authorities in the world, headlined the event, conducted coral reef talks and walks, and planted the seed for the SOS Coral Reef Monitoring Project. Children were encouraged to participate and were given coral reef coloring books.

Oceans Day 2003 included the first successful trip of Ocean Pulse At Sea on June 8, 2003 to Nualolo Kai. Students from Waipa journeyed on the Tropic Bird to Nualolo Kai, where they mapped the reef and met with the Na Pali Coast Ohana and archaeologists to help cleanup and learn about the ancient fishing village. The students compared their finding at Nualolo Kai to the data they collected at Waicoco Reef in Hanalei Bay, and found some interesting results.

1st “Oceans Days” June 10, 1995

1997, the first International Year of the Reef, was an awareness building year.  The 2007 Clean Oceans Conference supports The International Coral Reef Initiative with their choice of 2008 as the International Year of the Reef.

June 8th is SOS Hawaii Oceans Day in perpetuity proclaimed by Governor Ben Cayetano, as well as International World Oceans Day.  Past SOS Clean Oceans Conferences have received letters of support from President Bill Clinton, Governor Cayetano, Hawai’i state Representatives, Senators, Congress, and all the county mayors who are all again invited to participate this year!

2007 marked the 10th anniversary of the first ever Reef Check in the world performed by Reef Check, SOS and hundreds of volunteers!. Reef Check is a volunteer, ocean conservation organization designed to save coral reefs globally and temperate reefs in California. Reef Check is active in over 82 countries and territories throughout the world.

The U.S. Coral Reef Task Force voted to begin the planning process for an International Year of the Reef in 2008. The task force called on researchers and coral reef managers to use the year to increase global awareness of the economic, ecological and cultural value of coral reefs and to improve commitments to protect and sustain these threatened and valuable ecosystems. The action followed approval last week by over 45 nations and organizations of the International Coral Reef Initiative to support the idea, roughly 10 years after the first International Year of the Reef in 1997.

Currently a National Geographic Explorer in Residence, Dr. Sylvia Earle is one of the heroes of marine conservation. As a keynote speaker at this conference, she emphasized the importance of the ocean in global terms: it is responsible for the weather patterns we


see, the earth’s climate, and holds most of the diversity of life on earth. The ocean is the major life force of the planet – the heart of this whole interconnected web – and how much of your heart would you want to live without?

With this perspective, it is easy to see why the degradation of coral reefs is such an urgent problem. Even more so than pollution and sedimentation, overfishing is the most damaging anthropogenic threat to the marine world. About 90% of the populations of shark, tuna, and other apex predators have been eliminated by overexploitation. And it’s not just the profitable species that are affected by the high fishing effort: marine mammals, seabirds, non-commercially valuable fish, benthic ecosystems, and species that have yet to be described are killed in huge numbers through bycatch and destructive fishing methods.

Since the money drives the massacre, it’s up to the community to enjoy seafood responsibly. Know where the fish came from, and avoid fish that are overexploited or fished using destructive methods such as trawling, dredging, or long-lining to eliminate the demand for these at-risk species.

Dr. Earle also emphasized the importance of marine protected areas, pointing out that less than 1% of the oceans are currently protected, with most of the effort concentrated in the northwest Hawaiian Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. Kauai doesn’t have a marine protected area yet, but concern and willpower are present in the community. The establishment of a managed area in coordination with the local community would help bring back fish populations, revitalize the ecosystem, and preserve the reef for future generations.

Reef Check: Successes and Challenges

The first Reef Check was held in Hanalei Bay ten years ago in June of 1997, and on Sunday June 10th Reef Check revisited Hanalei Bay for a ten-year anniversary survey. Dr. Gregor Hodgson, founder of Reef Check International, explained that Reef Check works by using about 30 indicator species – some worldwide and some local – that are useful to quickly surmise the health of a reef. For example, the presence of large fish and lobsters on a transect line survey is an indicator of a more healthy ecosystem. Many governments have attempted to monitor their reefs using very detailed, in-depth methods and they have failed, so why not use the simpler, standardized and effective Reef Check protocol?

1997 was also the first International Year of the Reef, which marked a breakthrough for coral reef attention in the media. Prior to the establishment of Reef Check, most scientists agreed that pollution and sedimentation were the greatest threats to the marine environment; after Reef Check data was analyzed, it became clear that overexploitation of fish stocks is actually a much more pressing problem. This is one issue that will hopefully be addressed more efficiently as we approach the 2nd International Year of the Reef in 2008.

Reef Check has expanded greatly since the first global survey, from 315 sites in 31 countries to a current wingspan of 800 sites in over 80 countries. However, the number of surveys per year is low – probably too low for really valid statistical data. As an organization that depends on volunteers, Reef Check hopes to increase survey numbers by tapping into community enthusiasm and introducing Reef Check methods to students. Reef Check also hopes to continue the trend of increasing media coverage for reef issues, which has improved greatly starting in 1997 and has greatly benefited conservation efforts.

Coral Bleaching, Then and Now

Dr. Lucia Gutierrez of Reef Check Guatemala compared the 2005 Caribbean bleaching event to the global bleaching event of 1997-1998. While the event in 1997-1998 caused mass coral mortality in Indonesia, Australia, and Belize, the 2005 bleaching was restricted in impact to the Caribbean. Overall, reefs fared better in 2005. During the 1997-98 bleaching, areas of Indonesia had up to 100% bleaching and coral mortality, while some areas of Belize were impacted by 70% bleaching. In 2005, however, only 33% of the coral in the Caribbean were affected, and there was only a 12% mortality rate after the event. A few months later, the reefs had recovered significantly. These bleaching events raise several questions concerning the ecology of coral reefs. Are some corals more susceptible to bleaching than others? And what are the long-term ecological impacts of these events?

Hawaii’s Unique Threat: Invasive Species

David Raney is the head of Reef Check Hawaii. Their mission? Mai ke kai mai ke ola, E malama i ke ka. From the ocean comes life; Protect the ocean. Raney emphasized that scientific monitoring of the reef is necessary but not sufficient for protection. He pointed out the threat of alien species, which is especially a concern for Hawaii’s marine life since so many of our species are found nowhere else in the world. Scientific surveys should include a check for invasive algae in addition to surveying coral cover and animal life. In terms of fishery management, Raney advocated a return to holistic community-based management practices. http://www.reefcheckhawaii.org.

A Tsunami’s effects on Coral Reefs

Cori Kane, also of Reef Check International, spoke about the recent tsunami’s effects on reefs in Aceh, Indonesia. The earthquake that caused the tsunami ran for 1300km and produced a fault 150km wide. Half a million cubic kilometers of water were initially moved by this quake, heralding a humanitarian crisis when this mass of water reached the shore. Surprisingly, the coral reefs fared well.

The greatest coral damage appeared at sites of “island tipping,” where the force of the moving water lifted shallow reef flats out into open air, causing 100% coral mortality. Also, the earthquake caused some damage by overturning corals in the immediate vicinity. However, Reef Check surveys showed that long-term damage was minimal, with an average of  40% live coral (compared to a global average of 35% live coral). Even compared to this tsunami, which is an extreme example of the power that nature possesses, overexploitation and destructive fishing still pose the largest threat to Indonesian reefs.

The Importance of Hawaiian Reefs

Heading off the second session which focused on our Hawaiian Reef Environment, Dr. John Mitchell of the Hawaii Dept. of Natural Resources summarized the importance of our reefs and also the most pressing threats that they face. The reef is the habitat of a diverse group of organisms, from bacteria to large apex predators like sharks. This complex ecosystem is crucial to Hawaiian culture and to families that depend on the reef for food. The reef is also a driving factor in ecotourism, a major economic strength for Hawaii. However, like reefs worldwide, Hawaii’s reefs face threats from pollution, sedimentation, overuse and exploitation, physical damages, and invasive species. www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/dar/index.html.

Traditional Reef Management

Dr. Carlos Andrade of UH at Manoa provided a cultural perspective to the day’s proceedings. Using traditional ahupua’a management as an example, he encouraged us to look at the world we live in as part of our family, rather than something that we control or possess. Dr. Andrade used the example of the sea turtle to show the contrast between sustainable and unsustainable practice: Native populations ate sea turtle once or twice a year, but when it hit restaurant menus, twice a year turned into every day, pushing the species into endangerment. However, sustainable management by periodically closing fisheries and prohibiting take of some species will help to insure that the fishery is still available to future generations.http://www.hawaii.edu/huikonohiki/facultyCarlos.html

From the Rivers to the Sea

Sedimentation and pollution are common problems on the inshore reefs of the world. Dr. Carl Berg’s talk focused on Hawaii, which is very susceptible to these issues since nearly all the reefs are close to shore. Pollutants from field runoff, leaking septic systems, dirty roads, and storm drains quickly find their way to the ocean, whether through rivers or groundwater seeps. What can the community do to help with pollution and sedimentation issues? Be informed and aware! Pick up after your dogs and participate in trail restoration projects. If you have a farm, be aware of the effects of herbicides and pesticides and leave a 5-15ft “buffer zone” of natural vegetation on the border of a road or stream. Also, upgraded and well-maintained septic systems can help to prevent groundwater seepage problems.

The Water is Rising

Everyone has heard about global warming and the ensuing climate change and sea level rise that would accompany a mass melting event. Dr. Chip Fletcher focused on how the sea level rise would affect Hawaii specifically, especially since new research from 2007 shows that the rate of ice melt in Greenland and Antarctica is accelerating at an alarming rate. The seas are likely to rise about one meter in the next century, which would put large areas of many coastal Hawaiian communities under a few feet of water. Beaches would all but disappear as the islands’ coastlines shrink. Dr. Fletcher remarked that the people most affected by this are not the tourists or the tourism industry, but the local residents who actually use the beaches daily. He emphasized that the construction of seawalls is NOT the answer to protect near-shore communities, since the groundwater level will rise in conjunction with the seas, causing flooding from below. ACTivism

Sustainability in Kauai is a popular topic of discussion for many activist organizations, but Keone Kealoha reminded us all that the most important step of activism is the actual act.  For positive change to happen, we need to commit to the proposed plan and follow it through to completion. We have many activist groups in Kauai, and we can see them all coming together at eco-roundtable meetings. Since we have this motivated group of organizations, the best way to take real steps towards sustainability is to network within the various organizations and collaborate towards larger common goals. We need to work together rather than create small task forces to create louder and stronger actions towards sustainability. http://www.malamakauai.org.

Success in the NWHI – Dr. Randall Kosaki

A wonderful marine conservation success story is our very own Northwest Hawaiian Islands National Marine Monument. This is the largest marine sanctuary in the world, just ahead of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in Australia. There is a significant difference in the distribution of species in the NWHI versus the main Hawaiian Islands which is directly due to the difference in fishing pressure. The biomass of apex predators, which are a key part of the reef ecosystem, is much higher in the NWHI – 58% as opposed to just 3% on the main Hawaiian Islands. Overwhelming public support fueled the creation of this precious area, teeming with endemic Hawaiian species. While fishing is being gradually phased out, the area still isn’t free from the threats of marine debris, abandoned fishing gear, and illegal activities.http://www.hawaiianatolls.org.

Too Many Tanks – Not Enough Fish

With fishing and water quality being the focal points in reef management efforts, aquarium collecting might sound like an insignificant activity. Then again, where are all the yellow tangs? Robert Wintner of Snorkel Bob Foundation exposed the impact of the aquarium trade on the reef ecosystem. Since collecting is legal and largely unregulated, it actually has severe impacts on the ecosystem. The yellow tang is the most popular aquarium export from Hawaii, making up 60% of the trade, so they are harvested relentlessly. Their absence alters the dynamics of reef grazing. Also, while yellow tangs on the reef may live to 45 years, they survive only about two years in average aquarium systems – meaning that the demand for yellow tang is unsustainable and puts the species at high risk. The wild-caught aquarium trade brings about $20 million to Hawaii’s economy each year, but tourism produces $1billion! It’s easy to see that a healthy reef is more valuable than a fish in a tank. Save Our Seas: Education and Outreach

One of the most important things we can do for our ocean environment is to educate and instill a passion for the seas in the next generation. Captain Paul Clark, president of Save Our Seas, advocated the use of classroom and field education to encourage scientific literacy and environmental concern, specifically in regard to our marine resources. Ocean Pulse is a drug-free program in which kids learn how to take coral, invertebrate, and fish surveys on a transect line, and simultaneously generate useful scientific data. This type of hands-on activity keeps kids open to lessons about sustainability and responsible stewardship. Clark also described plans for a Marine Education Center here on Kauai. This center would raise awareness in the community and tourism sector alike, help educate the youth, generate research about the health of the reefs and fishery management, and contribute to sustainability efforts on Kauai. http://www.saveourseas.org.

The Government and Reef Conservation

Dr. Katherine Chaston of UH discussed one way in which the US government has responded to the coral reef crisis – with the creation of the US Coral Reef Task Force in 1992. The task force works to develop local action strategies based around three-year plans. In Hawaii, they hope to contribute to marine conservation through implementing holistic land-based management practices at the watershed or ahupua’a level. In Kauai, they are currently monitoring the Hanalei Bay watershed, along with two other sites on Maui and Molokai. The task force hopes to reduce anthropogenic load to the reef by 25% in the near future, while also increasing awareness through the distribution of volunteer instruction pamphlets for reef and watershed care and monitoring.

International Declaration of Reef Rights

The event concluded with a reminder that the second international year of the reef is 2008 – coming up quickly! Dr. Gregor Hodgson read the International Declaration of Reef Rights, a global petition for reef protection and activism. The petition declares that all reefs have the right to be free from overfishing and destructive fishing, direct human and boater impacts, pollution, acidification, damage due to poorly managed coastal communities, and coral disease.
